The Green Beyond

Okay, here is my last plein air piece of the year; I just finished it. It's a 10" x 8" oil on canvas. I painted it in the Dogwood Pond area of Hills and Dales Park in Kettering, just beyond the pond. There is a nice view from the edge of the pond looking toward one of the greens at Community Golf Course. Hence the title, "The Green Beyond." Enjoy!

Flora and Fauna - Klinger Show opens 12/16 at Springs Gallery

I'm finally getting around to featuring my work and work from my husband, Jim. It will be Jim's raku ceramics and some of his 3D sculptures, along with some brand new oil and acrylic paintings I've been doing lately. Shown here is one of Jim's raku Leatherback Sea Turtles. My work will be around for awhile, but shortly after the opening - Jim will need to take a lot of his for his Florida shows coming up next month. So catch it while you can! The opening will be Friday, December 16, 6 - 9 pm, coinciding with the Village's Fling in the Springs, with later hours and general holiday festivities. Hope to see you there!

Fall in the Fen

Here's my last (probably) plein air piece of the year. It's a 10" x 8" oil on canvas I call Autumn Colors. It's actually the 11th in a series I've done at the Woodman Fen in Dayton. It's amazing to think that this lovely, preserved fen (semi-wetland) is tucked into an urban neighborhood off Patterson and Woodman. Enjoy!

Here's a little 8" x 6" oil on canvas I painted also out at Wegerzyn Gardens in Dayton. It's in their children's garden area. The whole roof is covered with living, growing sedum, so I just call it Sedum House. Enjoy!

Willow Maze

Here's a little one I painted recently of the cool, giant sculpture out at Wegerzyn Gardens in Dayton. The sculpture was created completely from willow seedlings harvested from (an overabundance at) the Engelwood Dam area north of Dayton. The piece here is a 6" x 8" oil on panel I'm calling Willow Maze, and I'm actually painting it from inside the sculpture looking out. (You can catch a peek of the sculpture in the preceding painting too). Enjoy!

A Day at the Lake

Here's one I did in May on the last day of my artist residency in South Carolina this year. The lovely Poinsett Park, where I stayed for a week, featured a large and beautiful lake called Old Mill Lake. It had water lilies, snakes and alligators. I even saw (and photographed) a water moccasin! This piece is a 12" square oil on canvas I'm calling "Lake Day." Enjoy!

Here's a new 6" x 8" oil on panel I just finished last night. I painted most of it at another park in Columbus, OH. Columbus has a wonderful park system - lovely and very organized, like a larger version of Dayton's own Five Rivers Metroparks. This particular park had a working/educational farm, much like our own Carriage Hill.

The chickens at this farm seemed (to me) to be longing to be on the other side of the fence, so I'm calling this piece "Cooped Up." Enjoy!

I have photographed and painted in the lovely Glen Helen Nature Preserve for years. Here is an image I made awhile back of the Yellow Spring in Glen Helen, the namesake of the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio. I like it so much that I've made many versions and have found many uses for it as well. I am using it as a sort of logo for my new business - Springs Gallery. Carolina Pine Vista

I have a few others from my stay down there that I still need to work on, but this one feels done. I made it in one sitting (actually standing) up in the mountain foothills. It was a breathtaking vista that I returned to many times, just to enjoy.

The foreground features Mountain Laurel, a lovely flowering shrub unique to the area that only blooms this time of year. A Little Lake Painting - SOLD

Here's the first little (6" x 8") oil I did a few days ago at the start of my art residency in South Carolina. It's a view of the Old Levi Mill Lake near the park headquarters. I could photograph and paint just at this lake every day for a week and never tire of it. I just have to watch out for the alligators and water moccasins (both of which I've seen).

The location for my art residency is Poinsett Park, located near Sumter, SC. Due to its location, it's an unique merging of several different ecosystems, such as coastal plains and woodland foothills. There are creeks, swamps, mountains, a lake, pine forests, and tons of Spanish moss - it's lovely.

Well, I'm not exactly doing the "painting a day" as planned, but I have been painting away lately. I just left a workshop in South Carolina and I'm now doing a week-long art residency, also in South Carolina, before heading back to Ohio and the new gallery (Springs Gallery: www.springsgallery.blogspot.com). The Art of Healing

I entered 2 small paintings in the Yellow Springs Arts Council's "Art of Healing" Show. I tried to pick some of my new ones that seemed in keeping with the theme. They are "An Apple a Day," (5" x 7" oil on masonite) and "Life's a Bowl," (6" x 8" oil on canvas panel); both appear below. The opening reception will be Friday, 3/18/11, 6 - 9 pm, and the show is up until 4/8. The beautiful, new YSAC Gallery is located at 309 Xenia Ave., Yellow Springs. A cloudy bright day

When I was in graduate school taking photography classes, I had a professor who used to describe certain days as "cloudy bright. That's the kind of light that renders detail," he said. Here's a common sight around the holidays - a lovely poinsettia plant just starting its decline. I always feel a little sorry for them and I try to "over Winter" them, usually to no avail. This one's a 6" x 8" oil on canvas panel titled "New Year's Poinsettia."

P.S. I just returned from an art residency in Poinsett State Park in South Carolina (5/11), where I learned that the park - and the plant - were both named after Dr. Joel Poinsett - the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico - who loved the plant and introduced it to the U.S. in the 1820s.

This piece was not done in a day, but it was just finished. It is an 8" x 10" oil on canvas panel entitled "Butterfly Visitation," and it's the 10th and final piece in a series I painted this year in the Woodman Fen, a peat bog/wetland area of Dayton.

The fen is one of the many wonderful restorations accomplished by the Dayton area's Five Rivers MetroParks. The Glen's Nature Arts & Crafts Show

The Glen Helen 29th Annual Nature Arts & Crafts Show is coming up - 11/20 and 11/21/10 - at the beautiful Glen Helen Building, 405 Corry St. in Yellow Springs, OH, and I'm in it again this year. Hours are Sat. 9 - 5 and Sun. 11 - 5. There is a small admission fee ($4) but it all goes to the Glen - a worthy cause indeed. And there are discount coupons everywhere, including in the YS News and on the Glen's website; I also have postcards with coupons on them. If you want some - just let me know. Accepted into Regional Sculpture Competition

Native Bead Artist at WSU

In my role with the WSU Multicultural Center, I recently installed the artwork of Katrina Mitten of Huntington, Indiana in the Student Union Art Gallery. Katrina is a Native American bead artist who has been beading for over 35 years; she works in the Great Lakes beadwork embroidery style. Her pieces are both contemporary and traditional in design, and she is known for her jewelry, bags, jackets, and her woodland style cradleboards. Katrina has won purchase awards from the Eitlejorg Native American Art Museum in Indiana for a cradleboard and a child's outfit, both of which are now in the museum's permanent collection. The WSU exhibit runs Tuesday, October 26 - Sunday, Nov. 21; I'll be taking it down in the afternoon on Monday.

Fresh Art at Bergamo

I painted recently in DVAC's annual Fresh Art/Fresh Air event, held this year at Bergamo. Those particpating were asked to show their work at Gallery St. John and we happily accepted. The show runs 11/10 - 11/28/10, with a closing reception on the last day, Sunday, 11/28, 2-4 pm. The piece on the left is a little 6" x 8" oil I painted there entitled "Sanctuary" (if you click on it - it gets larger). It is one of the 4 I have on display there now. Hispanic Artist at WSU

Through my work at the Wright State multicultural center, I recently installed an abstract painting installation of a Mexican artist who lives in Cincinnati, named Rebecca Nava Soto. Her work is beautiful and very thought-provoking. Her artwork is in the Student Union Art Gallery, and her artist reception will be Thurs., 10/14/10, 12:15 - 1:15 PM in the adjacent Pathfinder Lounge. She will be present to talk about her art, her life and her cultural inspirations. Receptions are always free and open to the public, so come on out!

Here (above) is one of Rebecca's pieces from the exhibit. It is a 4' x 6' oil on canvas titled, "Fish Wade through Black Jade."

1st in the Glen Show!

I attended the lovely opening reception for Glen Helen's 50th Anniversary Art Exhibit and Sale last night (7/2/10). I saw old friends and met new, enjoyed food, wine and music - and won First Place! I'm thrilled, especially since painting from observation is fairly new to me and I had a lot of great competition. Thank you Glen Helen - for everything!

Here (on the left) is a photo I made of one of the 3 paintings I have in the exhibit, titled, "Uphill Trail." It's a 12" x 9" oil on canvas panel and it's the one the jurors liked best. The Glen show will be up through Friday, July 16.

P.S. I also just learned that the Glen has accepted one of my photographs for their wall calendar - it's the one on the left, titled, "Fern Garden." Thanks again, Glen!

Peruvian Quilt Artist at WSU

In my position with Wright State University's Multicultural Center, I recently installed and held a reception for Peruvian quilt artist Flora Zarate at the Student Union Art Gallery. Her work is absolutely gorgeous and is not a common sight for this area. I hope you will make the time to go see her wonderful work. Peace Pieces

I am honored to report that I have been invited to show some of my sculpture in an upcoming international exhibit titled "The Art of Peace." It is described as "an open forum of peace art gathered from all over the world. An interesting perspective on peace will be seen through this international gathering of artists' work." (One of my sculptures, "A Hard Reign," is shown here.)

The exhibit is co-hosted by the Dayton International Peace Museum, Dayton's new non-profit gallery and studio called Missing Peace Art Space, as well as the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, which will host a large part of it at their 48 High Street Gallery (about a block from the Missing Peace Art Space) (links below). The exhibit commemorates the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords that resulted in an end to the Bosnia-Herzegovina conflict. Half of any profits or donations from the exhibit will be used to help support the Dayton International Peace Museum and half will go to help the Children of Narva, Estonia.

The exhibit runs October 22 through November 1, 2009, with an opening reception and silent auction at both DSPS and Missing Peace on Thursday, October 22, 5 - 9 pm. These events are free and open to the public. Please come out and support this interesting and important exhibit!

P.S. As a preview - please visit the Missing Peace Art Space through October 12, 2009, currently exhibiting the large, realistic, political paintings of New York master artist Max Ginsburg. This is a powerful exhibition!

Antioch Lives On!

Crowds cheered as keys were passed yesterday (9/4/09) and now it's official - my beloved alma mater Antioch College will survive - through the hard work of the ACCC (Antioch College Continuation Corporation). It was a long, hard fight but I never really doubted the college would prevail. You just can't tell Antiochians they can't do something. The powers that be are projecting for a small first class in Fall of 2011....And now the fun begins.

I found out recently that I received a 1st Place in the Landscape category from the Miamisburg Art Gallery show that opened August 15. Yahoo! The piece that won was a little abstract tree that has won awards for me in the past. People must enjoy looking at it - so I'll post it here again. Since May, 2009, I have been studying painting en plein air with Dayton landscape artist Jean Koeller, and others - learning and enjoying a lot. Jean and her students have been invited to have a show at Synesthesia Gallery in Centerville. It opens Friday, September 11th and runs through October 16; but the Opening Reception is Friday, September 18th, 6 - 9pm. Visceral Gallery, also in Centerville, is also having an opening the same night for their black and white show (called "Color Restrained"). Their reception is 5 - 10 pm. The invitational exhibit I wrote about earlier - at the Harcum Art Gallery at Wilmington (OH) College - is now up, and running through August 1. It is comprised of artists from the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors who won 1st place awards in the Fall, 2008 Members Show. I am honored to be in it amongst many established painters. Hello Dali!

I just delivered a new sculpture to CADC (Cannery Art and Design Center) for inclusion in their Dali-inspired exhibit, opening 2/28/09. The show is one of a few put on by Dayton galleries to pay homage to the work of Salvador Dali; some of his original works are here in town now!

My piece, shown here, is called "Daliphone." It is a nod to Dali's Surreal object titled "Lobster Telephone," made in 1936. Fun stuff!

Cannery Art & Design Center is Happening!

I'm now officially an artist-in-residence at the Cannery Art & Design Center (CADC), at 434 E. Third Street in downtown Dayton. There you will find some of my artwork (and sometimes me) along with the work of several other local and regional artists working in many types of media. There's lots going on down there these days, including - but not only - the fun First Fridays (open 5-10 pm every first Friday of every month). Another fun upcoming event is February 13th, 5-11 pm -- CADC's Three-Year Anniversary Celebration with art, refreshments, and the Dayton Improvisers Orchestra. Come on down! Art at the Trace

I'm going to be exhibiting/selling my work at the 4th Annual Art at the Trace, Saturday, February 14, 2009, 6 - 9 pm, at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace in Centerville, Ohio. Here's a blurb on the party:
"This elegant event will feature the work of 24 fine artists set to the backdrop of live music, gourmet appetizers, desserts and a cash bar in a country club setting. Local and nationally known artists display their work for sale in a variety of media - painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry and more. Thomas Chapman, who creates hand-blown glass sculptures, is the featured artist who has donated a piece of his artwork to be raffled off. All ticket holders will be entered in the raffle drawing. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door and may be purchased at the City of Centerville Municipal Building, Pro Shop at Yankee Trace, Centerville Framing and Gifts and Wasson Music Center."

I was just informed today that I have been invited to show some of my artwork in the Wilmington (OH) College Art Gallery next Spring which, of course, I accepted. The exhibit will be comprised of artists who won first place awards in the Dayton (OH) Society of Painters and Sculptors Fall, 2008 show. I did so (as I mention below) for a sculpture entitled "Heads Together (on the Survival of Antioch College.") I will get to exhibit 5 or 6 pieces, maybe more. I just returned from the opening reception of the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors annual holiday exhibit and I found out I received a Best of Show award. It was a selection amongst the new members only, but hey, who cares? - I'm still absolutely thrilled! Especially since it was for a painting, which is so new for me. I've only been painting since 2006, so any type of validation is great - especially this type. Thank you, DSPS, and juror, for your support and encouragement!

DSPS Annual Holiday Show and Sale

Since I am now a member of the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors (link below), I was able to enter several pieces (paintings and photography) in their upcoming Annual Holiday "New Members Small Works Show and Sale." The opening reception is Sunday, 11/30, 1-5 pm. Additional open gallery dates and times for this brief holiday event are: Fri, 12/5; Sat., 12/6; and Sun., 12/7 - all from 1-5 pm. In case you haven't been there before, DSPS is in a grand, lovingly restored home off East Fifth Street in the St. Anne's Hill historic district of Dayton. The address is 48 High Street - hence its name - 48 High Street Gallery. Bring friends and family and find some great, well-priced, small gifts of original art for yourselves and others. Three heads are better than one

Christine's sculpture, "Heads Together," (shown here) won first place in 3-D in the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors' Fall 2008 Members Exhibit. The piece, which measures only 5 ½"H x 9"W x 8"D, is made of stoneware clay, slip, and underglazes. I made it in Fall of 2007 while I was teaching ceramics at Antioch. This was around the beginning of the college's long struggle to survive after announcing it would close at the end of the school year 2008. I can't imagine Yellow Springs without Antioch. Let's hope it brings the college luck!

Amelia Ascends

One of Christine's poems, entitled, "Amelia Ascending," was published in a women's poetry chapbook recently. The book, entitled "Blind Faith," was released by Mock Turtle Press this past Summer, 2008, during Dayton's Ladyfest, a downtown celebration of women in the arts. I have actually been writing poetry and prose for many years but I don't submit it for publication very often.

Christine's abstract painting, "Night Vision," was selected as one of 58 pieces (of 288 entered) to be in Rosewood Gallery's 17th Annual Landscape Competition The View. The exhibit, of all Ohio artists, will be in the City of Kettering (OH) gallery July 14 - August 8, 2008, with an opening reception Sunday, July 13, 2-4 pm. Chamber Pot Gallery's Annual Show

Now in its third year, the public restroom galleries of the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce (hence the title: "Chamberpot") is currently exhibiting and selling all new work for its annual show, which opened June 20, 2008. Saving Antioch

In an effort to help save my alma mater, Antioch College, I created and donated a painting to the Antioch New York's fundraising exhibit, held recently at the cool, little Casa Frela gallery in Harlem, NYC. The show was called "Greetings from Antioch College - The Postcard Show," as all pieces were 5" x 7" tops. My piece (shown here), entitled "Life on the Edge," is a painting on fired clay. It now travels to L.A. to be in an upcoming Antioch Los Angeles exhibit, venue to be determined soon. It's exciting to be in New York and L.A. galleries, and an honor to help the cause which, at this moment, looks like it's going to be a success. As you may know, a newly formed corporation, made up of Antioch alumni and friends, is buying the college and will, finally, have its own board of trustees. Yahoo! Upcoming Exhibit at Dayton Convention Center

Christine will have an exhibit of her sculpture and photography at the Dayton Convention Center, March 3 through April 30, 2008. Entitled "Faces and Facades II," the exhibit will be a sequel, of sorts, to the one she had at Miami Valley Cooperative Gallery's YMCA space a few years back. Sponsored by the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, this will be the first one-person show in what was formerly an exhibition space of the Miami Valley Cooperative Gallery which, unfortunately, folded at the end of last year. An opening reception is planned for Friday, 3/7, 5pm - 7 pm. All are welcome.

Jim Wins Award in WSU Alumni Show

Jim had two sculptures juried into the Wright State University Alumni show, which runs 6/22/07 through 8/3/07. He also took second place in the show for his piece titled, "Secret Weapons." I'll get a picture of it on here and/or on the web site one of these days. The show consisted of 72 pieces from 51 alumni, and was held in recognition of university's 40th anniversary.

Chamber Pot Gallery

Also called a "loo with a view," the gallery is in its second year of showcasing some fine and fun artwork by local and regional artists (including moi).
